How Breast Augmentation Works
Breast augmentation, also known as “breast aug” or “boob job”, is a procedure for enhancing your breasts with implants or fat transfer. A wide range of breast size and shape concerns can be treated with breast implants. Breast augmentation is often indicated by developmental breast hypoplasia or underdevelopment of the breasts.
A breast augmentation can significantly improve the appearance of deflated breasts following pregnancy (postpartum glandular hypomastia), after significant weight loss, or simply as a result of gradual involution. Breast augmentation is performed in an outpatient surgery center while you are asleep. It takes about an hour for surgery to take place, and you’ll return home that day after you’ve woken up. How do I prepare for Breast Augmentation?
Two weeks before your breast augmentation surgery, we will schedule a comprehensive preoperative appointment for you. An extensive list of “dos and don’ts” is provided. The pre and post-operative instructions are reviewed, as well as prescriptions for postoperative medications. During this visit, any remaining questions can be addressed. For two weeks before surgery, blood-thinning medications (aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.) must be avoided. A basic blood test is ordered for preoperative testing as well as any breast imaging studies that are necessary (based on the patient’s age and past medical history).
How do I recover after a Breast Augmentation?
Approximately one to two hours after surgery, you will be discharged home with a friend or relative when you are fully awake and comfortable in our private recovery room.
Generally, Dr. X recommends returning to work or study after seven days, though some are able to return as early as four or five days post-surgery. The office will provide you with a post-surgical bra during the first week. If necessary, a compressive strap may also be recommended. Your 7-day follow-up visit will include instructions on implant displacement exercises. It is possible to replace the bra after one week with a standard sports bra. In approximately two weeks, it is possible to wear a normal bra and bathing suit. After seven days, breasts may appear firm and swollen, subsiding by 14 days, and then settling into their final shape and size by 12 weeks.
